Hello caravaners!
This week we are going to talk to you about a topic that you are going to love if you are surf lovers. The Peninsula is full of wonderful beaches to practice this sport. Throughout the article, we are going to take you through the best beaches in Spain and Portugal.
Then you just have to take the board, put the GPS in the motorhome and enjoy!
If there is a fashionable destination for surfing worldwide, that is Nazaré. This small town located an hour north of Lisbon has the highest waves on the Peninsula. Thanks to an underground canyon located next to its coast, the waves can reach up to 30 meters in height, especially in the North Praia.
Other places in the area ideal for surfers are the Petrogao Beach, that of Scallop and of Sao Pedro de Moel, a little further north. The latter also has two campsites next to the beach to leave our caravan.
In the area that goes from Rate, in full Strait of Gibraltar, to Cadiz capital, we find the best beaches in southern Spain for surfing. In addition, we are in an area with a better climate, more hours of light and a significant number of campsites and surf schools.
Tarifa, famous for its high winds, is the mecca of world windsurfing, although on beaches like Bologna or The Lances surfers are also welcome. A bit further north, we have to highlight the El Palmar beach, among the beautiful towns of Vejer de la Frontera and Conil de la Frontera, Historic Artistic Complexes. In this fantastic beach of several kilometers, there is an area enabled for surfing that, in addition, is usually full all year round.
Finally, we have to mention three beaches in the capital. The most accessible going by caravan, due to its parking facilities is that of Cut, on the isthmus that joins the town to the Peninsula. The Victoria beach, awarded as the best urban beach in Europe, and, above all, the Santa Maria del Mar beach o de las Mujeres have become the main destination for surfers who seek to combine their passion with the leisure offer of a capital, especially in winter.
The beautiful town of Peniche it is the westernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. South of NazaréIt is another area where it stands out for its high altitude waves. his Praia da Medao it has been included in several world championships, becoming the official Portuguese capital of the south.
In addition to being a great beach for the south, kitesurfers are also in luck, because it has all the facilities for their practice. Without a doubt, the best time of year to go is while the world championship is being held, with an atmosphere that is impossible to beat.
If the beaches of Cádiz stand out for their climate and hours of sunshine, those of the Basque Country are more famous for their altitude and hardness. Therefore, they are more recommended for people with some experience. Of all the beaches in the region, the most famous internationally is Mundaka, venue like the previous one of the world championship in its Laida beach.
Mundaka Not only does it attract surfers from all over the world every year, but it also has the merit of enjoying the “best left wave in Europe” in this category. It is a city that lives by and for surfing, where we can learn in different schools to go through its famous tube-shaped waves.
Almost as famous as Mundaka is Zarautz, in the neighboring province of Guipúzcoa. This town is also one of the cradles of the best Basque gastronomy. With a 3-kilometer beach and a sandy bottom, its waves are somewhat lower than those of Mundaka, reaching three meters.
Depending on the area, we can enjoy waves more recommended for beginners as well as for advanced level. In addition, we will be in a unique environment. The beach of Zarautz it is one of the corners where the seventh season of Game of Thrones was recorded. And it is that surfing a wave with a board can be one of the most similar experiences to flying with one of the dragons of the Khaleesi.
Although these are the most important beaches, we cannot forget that the Peninsula is full of other wonderful places to go south. From the beach of Viana do Castelo, in the north of Portugal, to that of The crazy ones or We are in Cantabria or Nemiña in the Costa da Morte Galician. And in the Mediterranean we have to point out Empuriabrava (Girona) or The Mata, in Torrevieja (Alicante). In these last two cases, if we want to learn from scratch.
And if you go by caravan, do not forget these tips. To surf!
